The Last Samurai Being a Favorite Movie

The movie The Last Samurai was not only a great fighting action movie but it also touched on human spirituality, cultural, lifestyle difference and the effect of Japanese culture on a western man. The movie was created in 2003 and takes place in Jap in the 1860s. An American military advisor is embraces the samurai culture that he was hired to destroy after being capture. The battle scenes in The Last Samurai are accurate to how the samurai fought back then from weapons to battle strategies.The warrior strategies of the samurai were determined in part by the weapons that were being used as was the topography of the battle site where the fight was being conducted. They would use up close cavalry for open plains battle, while having archers in the mountains that were better suited for the forest and rocky terrains. They are able to combine these two ways to conduct long range and up close melee attacks during a battle. There are two completely different cultures that clash throughout t he movie.You have the Japanese old Samurai culture that hasn't changed for hundreds of years. Then there is the still new western American culture that Japan is trying to adapt into. The Japanese Samurai culture has always has great discipline and lived by the code of Bushido. Bushido has seven virtues to it which are, Duty or also known as Right Action, Courage, Benevolence, Morality, Truthfulness, Honor and Loyalty. They would live everyday disciplining themselves to this and believed so highly in it that if they disgraced themselves they would commit Seppuku which is taking their own life.While you have the new still forming western culture of America where people were more selfish greedy and wild instead of discipline. They strongly believed in growing stronger through selling or trading and expanding their reaches across the globe. In the beginning of the movie you will see the main character Major Nathan Algeren of the united states army who is sadden, angry and a personal los t of oneself. He despises himself so much that he has to lose himself every night in a bottle of alcohol hoping and wishing someone will release him from his pain by killing him.When he is capture by the same people he was suppose destroy, he is then able to see and study the way of how another culture lives. He eventually takes part in the ways of the Samurai and experiences the mysterious culture of his enemy. By keeping an open mind and fully taking in what he learned from the different culture of his enemies he is able to find a peace within himself that he has never felt before and a new path of life that he can follow happily with no regrets.The movie does have awesome historical accurate battle scenes but it also has a deeper story about how a different culture that can seem strange at first effect someone in a good way. Major Nathan Algeren was an unstable person that thought he didn't deserve to live but was able to find a peace that he never imagined through learning and e xperiencing a different culture that he use to refer to as primitive. It's just like the quote â€Å"never judge a book by its cover†.

Abstract: Chiquita Brands International and its leaders learned a very hard lesson about paying off terrorist groups to protect their employees. Over the past 25 years, no place has been more perilous for companies than Colombia, a country that is finally beginning to emerge from the effects its Colombian banana subsidiaries had made protection payments to terrorist groups from 1997 through 2004. The Justice Department began an investigation, focusing on the role and conduct of Chiquita and some of its officers in this criminal activity. Subsequently, Chiquita entered into a plea agreement that gave them the dubious distinction of being the first major U. S. company ever convicted of dealing with terrorists, and resulted in a fine of US$25 million and other penalties. To make matters worse, the industry was facing pressure from increasing retailer purchasing power, major changes in consumer tastes and preferences, and Europe’s imposition of an â€Å"onerous tariff† on companies that sourced bananas from Latin America. With this in mind, Fernando Aguirre, Chiquita’s CEO since 2004, reflected on how the company had arrived at this point, and what had been done to correct the course so far. He faced major challenges to the company’s competitive position in this dynamic industry. What would it take to position the company on a more positive competitive trajectory? In conclusion, Chiquita was in a bad situation, and as a normal corporation whose aim is to make profits they need to consider what’s in their best interest and that is to execute the country. The situation was straightforward, either Chiquita pays for the terrorist†¦ Blood Bananas Background Chiquita Brands International is one of the world’s largest banana producers that were founded in 1899. Founded as United Fruit Company, Chiquita has grown to be one of the top three companies in the banana business with a combined control of 60% market share. Chiquita had annual revenues of $4. 7 billion and operating plants worldwide with its main business coming out of Colombia. In this case study, it tells the story of the Chiquita business and how they faced many problems in the past years. The main problem in this study is how Chiquita paid the AUC terrorist group a combined $1. million from 1997 to 2004 and then told the United States Justice Department about their dealings. After the criminal investigation and plea agreement, the new CEO was faced with the decisions of a new direction for the company. With SMART goals, Chiquita will be able to easily move forward from their negative image to a more acceptable one. Competitive Strategy Because of their fallen reputation, Chiquita must now look at its stance compared to its competitors to see how they are now going to position themselves. Now that companies have seen them fall, they most certainly have taken advantage of some of Chiquita’s audience who has turned away from the brand.The best thing for Chiquita to do is to look at their models and determine whether they should focus on a Resource Based Model or an I/O Model. I believe Chiquita should focus on the I/O Model so that they can look at their external environment and gain a sustainable competitive advanta ge again. The I/O Model will shape the company and use the five forces to identify the attractiveness of the industry it’s currently in so that it can seek out an advantageous position to take again while reshaping its image. Corporate StrategyChiquita must look at their corporate strategy to analyze their global strategy and multi-business firms. Since Chiquita is a worldwide company, they must look at their globalization drivers. Their main focus would be their market driver and their government driver. This will also help give the company a sustainable competitive advantage. The company should also analyze its performance through financial assessment and real actions. Concise strategic decisions With the implementation of the concepts stated above, Chiquita should be able to be a more positive and reputable company. It should be easy for Fernando to implement these strategies and come up with concise decision. Concise strategic decisions will help the company have a stronger background to rely on and make their implementations work strategically. Arguments and Recommendations Above was listed how Fernando should implement various strategies and plans for the company.I will now recommend various decisions for the company in its past dealings with the AUC and how it should move forward from those decisions. I believe the root causes for Chiquita’s actions in Colombia that ultimately let to their conviction was their top management team decision-making biases and their values and ethics. Chiquita’s top m anagement team wasn’t making decisions in unison and you could tell this by the various executives either quitting or retiring. The guilt from the different stances each executive took made them eventually leave the company because they had dug themselves as well as the company into the ground.I also believe the cause for Chiquita to get convicted was their values and ethics. I believe this because in the case, Chiquita tried to change their core values in 1999 to better the company. If they believed in strong values and ethics from the start, they would have never had to revamp their core values. Chiquita should’ve taken charge from the start with their decision making styles and their values and ethics so that they would have never placed themselves in the position to pay the AUC which in turn led to their conviction.With a sound team with sound goals, Chiquita will always prosper internally. I believe Chiquita and its managers did have a choice in the AUC payments. Yes Chiquita was doing business in an unstable political environment but they should have taken a stance and fought for what they thought was right. The actions the manager partook in were not ethical principles and I believe they were looking out more so for themselves than the company as a whole. I believe Chiquita could have came up with a strategy that would have made both the company profitable and satisfy its stakeholders without paying the AUC.If Chiquita felt like it didn’t have a choice, they should have involved the law enforcements well before they started the payments. If they would have done this, they would have never had to worry about the safety of its company or the terrorist groups in Colombia. Other companies that should be worried about Chiquita’s experience are companies that were involved in similar circumstances as Chiquita. In the case, it stated that Chiquita was the first company to get convicted for paying terrorist groups.If similar companie s were doing the same, they should cease the payments and learn from Chiquita’s mistakes because it stated that the law was cracking down and getting harder on this crime. Companies that are doing business in lesser developed economies should keep the employees’ safety at heart but at the same time do business in ethical ways. The factors of the political and economic environment should also be in concern when doing business in these lesser developed economies so that they will make sound business decisions.This story changes my perspective about doing business abroad because it shows me that just because you have a competitive advantage and resources to make millions doesn’t mean you have a safe environment to run your business in. It helps me understand that there is more to business than making money and that you have to have all of your business standards and strategies in place to successfully operate a company abroad. The current CEO can implement the stra tegies I listed above in my strategic analysis to restore Chiquita’s reputation and ensure future competitiveness.With the implementation of these strategies, Fernando can lead the company in the right direction and provide a stronger stance for the company. The main thing for the company to do is to revamp its mission and vision statement because this is the most important start for the company. After that, it will help formulate the company’s competitive and corporate strategies that it must restructure. In these they will implement new policies and analyze their internal performance for the company. In the end, Chiquita should come up with concise strategic decision so that it can make the right plan for its company.

Several of these articles present typologies of services and provide directions for improving quality, productivity and operating efficiency, however relatively little has been done to test the proposed ideas. In order to understand more of these various service management typologies, an actual business organisation that focuses on providing services will be observed and analysed. In the discussion, the design and strategies of the selected company in the Oil Industry service sector will be taken into account. Recommendations for improvement will also be provided at the end of the discussion. 2.0 Model of the Service The variety of the service sector makes it complicated to come up with useful generalisations concerning the management of service organisations. Therefore, a considerable amount of research has been focused on developing service classification schemes. For example, Judd (1964) classified services according to three categories: rented goods, owned goods and non-goods services. Similarly, Rathmell (1974) categorised services according to type of buyer, buyer motives, buying practices, type of seller, and degree of regulation. Even though these classifications show how some services are different from the others, they do not provide much useful insight into the design and management of service processes from an operational perspective. More recent classification schemes have explored the complex nature of service delivery systems with the goal of identifying differentiating characteristics, which affect quality and process improvement, as well as service design. For example, Shostack ( 1977) and Sasser, Olsen and Wyckoff (1978) developed the concept of product-service-package based on the tangible versus intangible nature of services. More recent researchers however believe in an integrated approach to service management. For example, Thomas (1978) argues that a large part of manufacturing experience is irrelevant to the management of service operations because the supply services are very different from that of manufacturing. Sullivan (1981) and Bowen and Cummings (1990) also advocate an integrated approach to service management and suggest that operations management researchers must include organisational behaviour and marketing constructs and techniques to address service operations problems adequately. The means of classifying service models are indeed varied. For this particular analysis though, the model proposed by Schmenner (1986), also known as the Service Process Matrix (SPM), will be used. The SPM expands the customer-contact model and categorises services on two dimensions. One is labour intensity, and the other is customer contact and service customisation. Schmenner (1986) proposed a two-by-two service process matrix that classifies services as service factory, service shop, mass service, and professional service. Under these models, CAPE Industrial Services can be classified under the Professional Service category. Professional service is described as the provision of services with high customer contact and or customisation and high labour intensity. Labour intensity on the other hand is defined as the ratio of the labour cost incurred to the value of the plant and equipment. A high labour intensity business involves relatively small plant and equipment investment relative to a considerable amount of worker time, effort, and cost. The second dimension in the classification scheme combines two distinct concepts: customer interaction and customisation. A service with a high level of interaction is one in which the customer can actively intervene in the service process. A service with high customisation will work to satisfy an individuals particular preferences. The joint measure has a high value when a service exhibits both a high level of interaction and a high level of customisation for the customers. The facts presented in this case are based on fossils and skeletal remains, the likelihood of an explosion creating a perfectly structured world fit for life, and the lack of continuing evolution. One fact that lends itself to creation is the lack of a missing link. In order to prove that humans evolved from apes there would need to be a half man, half ape out there. Scientists have been searching for this missing link, since the origin of the evolution theory and no remains have been found to indicate this link exists. Human remains have been found from previous times and all of them have been human. Scientists have found partial remains of very old skeletons, which they claim are up to 3. 5 million years old they attempt to claim these as missing links (Creationtheory. org 2006) The truth however is the remains are so deteriorated is would be impossible to tell if they are human or ape. They are not something in between even in modern society, facial characteristics and jawbones differ between cultures, therefore claiming the bone structure differs from that of a human is inaccurate. These living single cell organisms then somehow evolved into fish, which turned into birds, mammals and eventually humans. If evolution had occurred, it would not just stop squirrels should be starting to walk on two legs and apes should be turning into people and they are not. People and technology are advancing, but people are staying people. If after the evidence, facts and reasoning of this case have not convinced all who hear it there is only one logical, intelligent, and educated answer for the beginning of the earth, then the facts need to be presented again. The only reasonable solution is that the earth and all of its contents were created by God who had a plan and followed it. Any human who chooses to believe their ancestors were amoebas, fish, or even apes is simply making an effort to deny God. This is because they do not want to recognize God’s authority and follow his laws. They would rather live in a world that happened by some unrealistic explosion. No scientist could even show an instance where order was created from chaos (such as an explosion), yet this is what evolutionists want people to believe. It is the job of the reasonable intelligent humans, who know their ancestors were humans to convince others the true story of how the world came to be. To achieve the following sub titles constituted as guidelines for the discussion; anatomy of human of intelligence, theories of human intelligence and factors affecting human intelligence Anatomy of Human Intelligence Human nature has intelligence that governs the human mental ability and to as cognitive ability. Despite being a widely studied and debated topic there is still lack of a universal definition for intelligence because of its compound and many-faceted nature i.e it engages multiple areas of the brain, instead of just having one intelligence center. Intelligence facilitates the gaining of knowledge and consequent wide applications in solving problems. The roots of intelligence are biological and it is believed to have evolved over time and is connected to structure of the brain and its development in that the intelligence quotients are related to the brain volume (Frohlich, 2004). According to Sternberg (1981), psychologists and laymen agree that intelligent people are characterized by their capacity for solving problems, their expertise with language and their open-minded nature to innovation. According to Flinn et al (2004), the evolution of human intelligence has been so rapid compared to other species such that the human brain increased by about 250% in less than 3 million years. This is evidenced by remarkable behavioral changes of the past few generations. They further argue that the high evolution rates leading to greatest complexity in human are due to the demand of their environment citing ecological demands, such as hunting or climatic variability and selective pressures favoring other species compared to them. Research on human intelligence has become intense in trying to answer the several questions raised on basic structure and mechanisms of intelligence following the discoveries made in relation to genetics of intelligence and its functioning in the most recent stages of human development. In trying to classify intelligence, the following three classes were arrived at; social intelligence, natural or potential intelligence and academic intelligence. The social intelligence is a practical mode of intelligence used in making day to day life decisions in all fields. Natural or potential intelligence helps in acquisition of knowledge and cognitive abilities essential for easy interaction with the surrounding environment. The third form of intelligence is more of as measure of the cumulative levels of the former two types of intelligence describing the complexity of intelligence and is characterized by the IQ tests. Modern psychology classifies intelligence in two categories namely fluid int elligence and crystallized intelligence. Fluid intelligence is mainly the use of self acquired knowledge through life experiences to solve challenges and crystallized intelligence is more like academic knowledge as it largely depends on long-term memory. However all these different forms of intelligence are dependent and do not operate in isolation (Colom Pueyo 2000). Theories of Human Intelligence In an endeavor to understand human intelligence, there are various theories advanced to explain it. They can be divided into the unilateral construct based on unitary entity of general intelligence and those based on multiple dissimilar activities. Some of the theories discussed below include Psychometric approach theories, Piagets stages of cognitive development, Sternbergs Triarchic theory of intelligence and Gardners multiple intelligences theory. Psychometric approach to understanding intelligence is the most used and is based on psychometric tests. Some of the theories advanced based on this include; Charles Spearman in 1904 came up with Two-factor Theory of intelligence as a way of measuring general intelligence using Tetrad Differences. His basic inputs were common sense (native capacity) and sensory discriminations. It stated that every test can be divided into a g factor and an s factor. Where the g-factor measures the general factor or common function among ability tests and the s-factor measures the specific factor unique to a particular ability test.
